TED Project Countdown: When climate change knocks on your door.

The flaming Amazon and bleeding Australia as well as the numerous small weather phenomena which afflicted countries of Asia, Africa and the other continents, are few of the examples that were broadcasted worldwide as evidence that climate change is not a problem of the future which we will have to face, but has already knocked on our door. On the other hand, the seventeen-year-old Greta Thunberg’s hardcore speech at United Nations, the countless tweets about Leonardo DiCaprio’s actions and the small or big NGOs that are fighting on a daily basis to spread the message of individual responsibility are the images we mostly saw of on social media in the year that passed as well as the year that has come.

The global community has been afflicted, don’t deny it. The planet is getting warmer, the forests are being destroyed, the ice is melting and in a few decades the Earth will look a lot different. The difference of the climate change phenomenon from other phenomena which the global community is concerned about is retrospectively, on the one hand, due to the massive impact it has caused and will cause, and on the other, due to the massive responsibility that is required to face it.

But what do we really know about climate change? Who has the biggest share of responsibility? In an incessant struggle to find the central instigator of the problem, the distraction from its essence leads to further inaction and denial of responsibility.

If an answer ought to be given to such a question, then you and me and every other human being on the Earth has a great share of responsibility for the reckless abuse of the resources Mother Earth has offered us, the incorrect way of recycling materials, as well as the use of appliances, machines and means of transport that result in great emissions of carbon dioxide. It does not suffice, however, to solely dwell on the problem. One must look for solutions to it.

TED, as an organization coming from California, started with the aim to spread ideas which could improve contemporary societies as well as contribute to the promotion of a better future. Having obtained a strong voice globally, it thinks that it should seize the opportunity and assist in practice in informing as well as involving people in climate change. Project Countdown, as TED’s initiative, started precisely with this aim. The central idea of this venture is to find ways in which the emissions of carbon dioxide will be minimized in the next years.
