The power of giving and volunteering

From a very young age, I remember myself sharing things, thoughts, ideas and opinions without expecting anything in return. Something like this may sound selfish and in today’s society – which is in decay in many areas – to give without receiving seems ideal, however, it is an attitude that I have adopted in recent years, especially during my student years, and I think that I won’t let go.

Sharing, freely exchanging opinions, thoughts, ideas, concerns, reflections and tangible things selflessly is one of the biggest elements that can undoubtedly lead society and its members to a better way of life. Free from vices, sadness, sorrow and depression – to the extent, of course, that this is possible.

Greek society – and not only – has shown its interest in the fellow human many times, without seeing skin color and religion. In great and difficult times, donation, volunteering and giving are there to remind us that when people want, they can and do achieve a lot. A shocking example-the tragedy with the deadly earthquake in our neighboring country, Turkey, where people of all ages rushed to help, each in their own way. Food, clothes, toys were collected by the thousands in many public places and in many shops, in order to be sent to our affected neighbors.

The state often fails to provide substantial solutions to address various problems. The common man, however, the day laborer, is always there to help.

In November 2017 with the floods in Mandra, in July 2018 with the deadly fire in Mati, in August 2021 with the fires in Evia, the Greek population of the entire territory contributed, either financially or by offering material goods, in the rehabilitation of the affected areas.

There are many non-governmental organizations, such as the “Smile of the Child”, “Make a Wish”, the “Mazi gia to paidi” line and many others, either known to the general public or anonymous, which offer the maximum possible aid to deprived children, children without family, without home. Aid, which would not be possible without the contribution of ordinary citizens regardless of economic and social class.

Citizens show through these daily acts of help, how important volunteering is for achieving a better way of life, for a harmonious coexistence with my fellow human beings, where no one will feel alone in difficult moments. Because, we may live in a society which increasingly rejects all areas that need care, however the daily solidarity of people, far from skin colors, genders and religious discriminations, shows us that there is hope.
